Hello everyone! Today, we visited Bongeunsa Temple!

Bongeunsa Temple is a beautiful Buddhist temple with a history of about 1,200 years. It is located right in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul.

When we arrived at Bongeunsa, Jinyeomun Gate was the first thing we saw. Jinyeomun is the symbolic main gate of Bongeunsa. It represents leaving the busy city behind and entering the Buddha’s “world of truth.”

After passing through Jinyeomun Gate, we saw the Four Heavenly Kings, four guardian deities who protect the Buddhist teachings and the temple. They have strong and rather scary-looking faces!

We also had some fun tossing coins into the pond and making wishes.

As we walked farther into the temple, we came across Daeungjeon, the central building of Bongeunsa.

Daeungjeon is where Shakyamuni Buddha is enshrined. It is also an important place where Buddhist ceremonies are held.

After leaving Daeungjeon and walking a little farther, we finally saw Bongeunsa’s most famous landmark—the huge Maitreya Buddha, which is 23 meters tall!

Maitreya is the future Buddha who is believed to appear after Shakyamuni Buddha and save all living beings. We also walked around the statue and took a moment to pray with a peaceful and respectful heart.

Although our visit was short, it was a very special experience. It was wonderful to escape the busy city for a while and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful traditional architecture of Bongeunsa Temple.

It was a great opportunity to experience a little bit of Korean Buddhist culture right in the middle of Seoul!

If you ever want to escape the busy and noisy city and enjoy some quiet time, why not visit Bongeunsa Temple?
